NERVES IN HUMAN BODY






Adbucens:

Arises from brain nd supplies eye muscle which turns eyeball in an outward direction.

Accessory:

Arises from base of brain and supplies muscles which control throat, voice box, and muscles in neck and shoulders.

Acoustic:

Arises from brain and supplies organ of hearing in inner ear. Disease of this nerve results in loss of hearing.

Alveolar:

These nerves supply sensation to teeth, and also supply muscles which work lower jaw.

Ampullary:

These are branches of nerves supplying inner ear. Damage to these nerves may result in loss of sense of equilibrium.

Auditory:

Same as acoustic nerve.

Auricular:

A branch of he vagus which supplies sensation to outer ear.

Axillary:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies muscles and skin of shoulder region.

Bell, nerve of:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies muscle which controls movements of scapula. This is also called the long thoracic nerve.

Buccinator:

Arises from the mandibular nerve and supplies sensation to cheek.

Cardiac:

A group of nerves which supply heart.

Carotid:

In neck, arising from sympathetic nerves and supplying the glands in head.

Cervical:

There are 8 pairs of cervical nerves. They supply muscles of neck, shoulders and arms. They also are responsible for sensation in skin in these regions.

Chorda tympani:

Filaments from this nerve supply sensation of taste to tongue. It also supplies salivary glands beneath chin.

Ciliary:

These nerves go to muscle of iris, controlling contraction and dilatation of pupil.

Cranial:

There are 12 pairs of cranial nerves, viz., Olfacotry; optic; oculomotor; Trochlear; Trigeminal; Abducensl Facial; Acoustic; Glossopharyngeal; Vagus, Accessory; and Hypoglossal.

Cutaneous:

Located in every area of body, these nerves supply sensation to skin.

Digital:

Supply sensation to skin of fingers and toes.

Facial:

Arises from brain and supplies muscles of face and of facial expression.

Femoral:

A large nerve arising from spinal cord in lower back and supplying muscles of hip and thigh.

Genitofemoral:

Arises from spinal cord in lower back and supplies sensation to skin of thigh, and over testicles and/or around lips of vagina.

Glassopharyngeal:

Arises from brain and supplies muscles of palate and throat, tongue, etc. Also supplies sensation to tongue.

Gluteal:

Arise from spinal cord in lower back and supplies muscles of buttocks.

Hemorrhoidal:

Supplies muscle and skin about anus.

Hypogastric:

Supplies uterus and other organs in pelvis.

Hypoglassal:

Arises from brain and supplies muscles of tongue.

Iliohypogastric:

Arises from spinal cord in lower back and supplies muscles of lower abdomen.

Ilioinguinal:

Arises from spinal cord in lower back and supplies muscles of lower abdomen also supplies sensation to lower abdomen, to scrotum, and to skin about lips of vagina.

Infraorbital:

Supplies sensation to skin of face beneath eyes, to floor of nose and to upper teeth.

Interosseous:

These are branches of th radial and median nerves in the forearm. They supply muscles of forearm.

Libial:

Supply sensation to lips of face.




Lacrimal:

Supplies sensation to skin around outer portion of eye.

Laryngeal:

A group of nerves originating from the vagus nerve and supplying muscles of larynx, esophagus, trachea and base of tongue.

Lingual:

Supplies sensation to floor of mouth and to part of tongue.

Lumbar:

Five pairs of nerves arising from spinal cord in lower back. They supply the muscles of lower back and abdomen, organs in pelvis, and sensation to skin of lower abdomen and legs.

Mandibular:

A branch of 5th cranial nerve. It supplies muscles of chewing, and gives, sensation to the lower teeth.

Maxillary:

A branch of 5th cranial nerve. It supplies sensation to skin of upper face, cheeks, palate and upper teeth.

Median:

A large nerve from spinal cord in lower neck. It supplies many muscles of forearm and sensation o wrist and hand.

Mental:

Supplies sensation to skin of lower lip and chin.

Nasal:

group of nerves supplying sensation to skin of nose.

Nasociliary:

Supplies sensation to lining membrane of nose and hard palate.



Occipital:

These nerves originating from Spinal cord in the upper part of the neck supply sensation to he back of neck, back of scalp and back of ear.

Obturator:

Arising from spinal cord in lower back, they supply muscles on inner side of thigh. Also, sensation to skin over thigh, knee and hip region.

Occulomoter:

Arises from brain and supplies several muscles which move he eyeball.

Olfactory:

Arises from brain and goes to mucous membrane of nos. It is responsible for sense of smell.

Ophthalmic:

A branch of 5th cranial nerve which supplies sensation to forehead, eyeball and sinuses.

Optic:

Arises from brain and supplies the retin of eye.

Palatine:

A group of nerves which give sensation to membranes of soft palate, tonsils, and back of mouth.

Palpebral:

A pair of nerves which supply sensation to eyelids.

Peroneal:

A group of nerves which supply many muscles of knee region and leg. These are responsible for skin sensation in leg, ankle and foot.

Petrosal:

A group of nerves supplying parotid gland at angle of jaw and also, parts of the palate.

Phrenic:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies the diaphragm which separate chest from abdominal cavity.

Plantar:

Two nerves which supply those muscles of the foot which move toes.

Pneumogastric:

An old term for vagus nerve.

Popliteal:

The main nerve from which peroneal and tibial nerves orginate. It is located in back of knee.

Pterygoid:

A group of nerves which sends branches to jaw joint and muscles which move jaws.

Pudendal:

Arises from spinal cord in lower back and supplies the penis and region between genitals and anus.

Radial:

A large nerve originating from spinal cord in neck and supplying various muscles in upper arm and forearm. Also supplies sensation to parts of forearm, hand, thumb and index fingers.

Recurrent laryngeal:

A branch of the vagus nerve which supplies the larynx.

Sacral:

Five pairs of nerves arising from the lowest portion of spinal cord. Branches supply organs in pelvis, muscles of thighs and legs, and sensation to these areas.

Scapular:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies muscles which control movement of scapula.

Sciatic:

One of the largest nerves in the body, arising from spinal cord in lower back and descending back of thigh. It supplies many muscle and skin areas of thigh and leg.

Scrotal:

These nerves supply sensation to skin of scrotum.

Sphenopalatine:

Akin to nasopalatine nerves.

Spinal:

Thirty-one pairs of nerves arising from spinal cord.

Splanchnic:

These nerves supply organs such as stomach, gallbladders, liver, pancreas, intestines, etc.

Supraclavicular:

These nerves arise from the spinal cord in neck which supply sensation to skin of neck, shoulder and chest wall.

Supraorbital:

A branch of the frontal nerve which supplies sensation to upper eyelid and part of forehead.



Thoracic:

Twelve pairs of nerves arising from spinal cord in chest. They supply muscles and skin of back, he arms, and he abdominal wall.

Thoracic, lateral anterior:

rises from spinal cord in neck and supplies chess muscles.

Thoracic, long:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies muscle which controls movement of scapula; this is also called the nerve of bell.

Thoracodorsal:

Arises from spinal cord in neck and supplies the large muscle which lifts up upper arm.

Tibial:

Branches of sciatic nerve, which supply skin and many of the muscles of left leg and foot.

Trigeminal:

Arises from brain and divides into 3 branches, viz., the ophthalmic, maxillary and mandibular nerves. They supply muscles and skin of face and jaws.

Trochlear:

Arises from brain and supplies a muscle of he eyeball, the superior oblique muscle.

Tympanic:

A branch of glossopharyngeal which supplies sensation to middle ear and mastoid region.

Ulnar:

A large nerve of the arm which supplies many of the muscles of forearm and hnd. I also supplies sensation to skin in region of ring and little fingers, and certain areas of wrist and elbow.

Vagus:

Arises from brain and sends branches to supply muscles of throat, larynx and heart.

Zygomatic:

These nerves supply sensation to skin over cheekbone and part of temple.
